🌿 For the last four years we have been striving for a cleaner and healthier lifestyle. Our journey started when we had our firstborn, Odin. All we wanted was a way for Kristin to stay home and not have to work. Right around that time we were introduced to a little box of essential oils + a diffuser. Little did we know that it would inspire us to change other aspects of our lives.
🍟 Fast-food – Most of this stuff is terrible for you. Delicious, but terrible. It also adds up quickly and can become very expensive. Sure, it’s fast, but you pay the price with your health. We love cooking at home anyway.
🍸 Alcohol – Ryan stopped drinking almost two years ago, and I will have a glass of wine every now and then. But it’s pretty rare. This habit can also become very expensive, especially wasting money on a $15 drink out when you could have made that same drink for $2 at home.
🥤 Soda – We don’t drink any kind of soda and don’t keep it in our house. Occasionally, we will treat the boys with a Sprite, but that’s about it. We do love some Topo Chico with a drop of Lemon Vitality.
🍓 Fruits + Veggies – We love walking to the Farmer’s Market here in the Village to buy all our fruits and veggies. They are more rich in flavor and nutrients! We do this when we can, and if we aren’t able to one month we always buy organic options at least on the Dirty Dozen.
🏡 Home – This is the place where we are the most, yet, it can be the most dangerous. For example, everyone loves candles, and we used to, too! But the soot that a candle gives off is really bad for you. A study undertaken by the Danish Building Research Institute showed that candles shed more particles indoors than either cigarettes or cooking. A candle can fill the air with more micro-particles than a busy street.

We’ve slowly switched out all of our toxic products for ones that are safe and chemical free. Toothpaste, deodorant, dish soap, laundry soap, etc. We wanted to find a laundry soap that was TRULY free and clear, that ACTUALLY got our clothes clean, AND didn’t break the bank. We’ve tried almost every single “green” laundry soap out there, and found that Thieves Laundry Soap from Young Living is the best. It is a little more expensive, but cost should never outweigh health + wellness. It was really great because our little ones had no skin break-outs once we started using this.
We’ve recently discovered a really cool hack that makes each wash less than TEN CENTS a load. Here’s the recipe we followed:
- Two cups Thieves laundry soap
- One cup Thieves household cleaner
- One cup bicarbonate of soda – baking soda
- One cup soda crystals
- 6 gallons of warm water
- 60 drops of Essential Oils (we used Citrus Fresh)
Add to a 6 gallon bucket and combine.
Use 1/4 cup per load of laundry
Here’s our tips:
Cut the recipe in half! Why?
The original recipe came from the UK, so we didn’t know we were actually making SIX GALLONS OF FREAKING LAUNDRY SOAP. We ended up buying jars and have a bunch stored in our closet and it will likely last us for the next six months.
- Mix dry ingredients first
- Add the warm water slowly while mixing to ensure the soda crystals don’t clump
- Stir in the remaining ingredients until smooth
- Store in glass containers
- Give it a stir before doing a load
It feels like we do laundry EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. Especially with three kids. As soon as we get finished with laundry, one kid pees in the bed and the other has a blowout. 🤪 So whenever we found out a way to save some money AND have a laundry soap that kicks ass, we were S T O K E D !
